1) In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop, or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?


Our group decided on our use of conventions within genre, narrative structure, and form and style, which I have outlined and explained in further detail below.

The genre of our film is sci-fi/action. It was important for the audience to immediately understand and identify the theme of the film from watching the opening sequence. To avoid any confusion, we kept within the guidelines of the genre in several ways, described below:


We used the convention of time travel in our film as one of the main themes. Much of the plot revolves around a time-travelling device created by our protagonist Leora; and her attempts to keep it out of the wrong hands. We developed the idea of time travel so that the film was not set in the past, nor in the future; but mainly in the present day - featuring characters from the future. 


I made this gif to highlight the time travel sequence in Looper where the main character jumps back in time where he appears in front of his former self.


This is another gif I made to show our own time travel sequence where our protagonist - Leora, jumps through time from a futuristic setting to a present day setting in order to escape the clutches of the Henchman.






I created this gif to show an example of a title that is slightly interactive with the action on screen. The Henchman walks through the title, an effective touch to the titles without detracting from the scene.



We looked at the Zombieland opening titles as inspiration for our own titles, we aimed to make interactive titles however we later realised that it was too much of a time consuming task and required more practice and expertise than we could provide. However, we were happy with how our titles looked at the end.



More conventions of the genre:

The running scene at the beginning of our film is typical among films of a similar genre because chase scenes add to the excitement and set the fast pace for the rest of the film, promising more action to come. A small section of our chase scene is shown in the gif I made below.


Another film with a chase scene set in a forest and similar to ours is the on-foot chase scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which I have shown in the gif below.




Narrative Structure:

We used three main theories for the opening of our film sequence and we used them as a guide to the making of the film's narrative.

  • Todorov's theory: equilibrium -- disruption -- hero's journey -- new equilibrium                              The opening to our film challenged Todorov's theory as it started with the disruption of Leora being chased by the Henchman.
  • Propp's theory: the main 8 character roles, - villain, hero, donor, helper, princess, father, dispatcher, false hero.                                                                                                                     We incorporated some of these character roles into our film, the most obvious one being the villain, as Synergy and the Henchman, along with our hero - Leora. A less obvious character role which we used was the role of princess who in our film was the character Adam.



  • Levi-Strauss' theory: binary opposites                                                                                               The contrast between good and evil in our film is between Leora and Synergy (the henchman) as well as the contrast of time between the future and the present (2071 and 2014)
