We decided to research this film, as it is a British sci-fi film, which is similar to our own film. Whilst it does not have the same themes as what we are planning to incorporate (such as time travel), the opening does also feature an enigma - what is the creature, for example.
Title: Attack The Block (2011)
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Synopsis: A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.
Production Companies: StudioCanal, Film4, UK Film Council, Big Talk Productions
Distribution Companies: Optimum Releasing (UK), Sony Pictures Releasing (USA)
The opening of Attack The Block starts off at a slow pace, first establishing the setting - inner London. The soundtrack is quiet, to build tension as the camera follows one of the protagonists (Sam). Close-ups are used to convey characters emotions (or lack), as well as long and mid shots to revel character positions and the setting. Low angle framing of the gang and Moses is used to portray dominance and to intimidate the audience, and to show the gang from Sam's point of view. The soundtrack becomes more erratic when Moses is attacked by the alien, connoting his sense of fear, and inducing the same emotion in the audience.
Conventions of the sci-fi genre include the alien, as well as the more techno sounding soundtrack. Also, the use of blue lighting is also common of sci-fi films, as it is associated with the genre.
